WSIB Code of Business Ethics

The WSIB places the highest value on being an ethical organization and expects all our public servants to act in an ethical manner at all times.

The values of trust, fairness and integrity are the foundation of the WSIB’s Code of Business Ethics (COBE) and its corresponding program. For the WSIB to be successful, we must continue to build upon these core values and earn the confidence of our customers and stakeholders. The COBE reflects overarching values and is intended to provide clear and concise direction to our public servants regarding expected behaviour in the workplace.

Code of Business Ethics Principles

(These principles are an excerpt from the Code)

Integrity - we serve with integrity and transparency, in a manner that places public interest above personal interests.

Respect - we treat all people with respect, maintaining positive and productive relationships and demonstrating civility in all our interactions.

Inclusivity - we are committed to creating the conditions where everyone has an equal opportunity to contribute to their fullest potential and where all are treated with sensitivity, fairness, and dignity.

Wellness - we are dedicated to a culture of wellness and committed to protecting and promoting healthy and safe workplaces.

Accountability - we observe our obligations under relevant legislation, policies, procedures, practices and guidelines and take ownership of our actions and conduct.

Stewardship of Public Assets - we ensure careful, prudent and effective use of public dollars, assets and any resources entrusted to us, including private and confidential information. We do not tolerate misuse, fraud, theft or abuse.

The WSIB considers all disclosures of ethical violations with the utmost seriousness. Any identified ethical issues will be addressed in a forthright and effective manner. The WSIB has documented processes to register and resolve ethical issues. Furthermore, the WSIB does not tolerate retaliation, coercion, dismissal, threats or intimidation of anyone who in good faith raises complaints or concerns.

Customer service

If you have concerns about the service you have received, we recommend the following steps:

  • Raise your concern directly with the person that has been serving you.
  • If you are not satisfied, contact that person’s manager. WSIB customer service representatives (416-344-1000/1-800-387-0080) can give you the manager’s name and telephone number.

Ethics hotline

An Ethics Hotline is available to anyone wishing to report a violation of the Code of Business Ethics. There may be situations where reporting a violation to an external source is the preferred option. The hotline is an outsourced service that is available 24 hours a day.

Callers to the hotline will be asked a series of questions, including whether they desire to remain anonymous. The service provider will explain the process and answer questions the caller may have. The hotline is not equipped to provide advice on ethical issues. It is designed to receive and document reports of alleged violations only for the purpose of bringing them forward to the WSIB for review.  To contact the Ethics Hotline, call toll-free: 1-866-508-0052.

Current and former WSIB public servants

Current and former WSIB Public Servants can make a disclosure of wrongdoing, or report other violations of the Code of Business Ethics, in three ways:

  1. Internally to the Ethics Executive.
  2. Externally through the Ethics Hotline for all matters (excluding the behaviour of the President or Chair).
  3. Externally to the Ontario Integrity Commissioner if:
    • the matter relates to the behaviour of the President or Chair of the WSIB;
    • you have reason to believe that it would not be appropriate to disclose the wrongdoing to the WSIB directly; or,
    • you have already disclosed the wrongdoing to the WSIB but have concerns that the matter is not being dealt with appropriately.
