Tips for writing your resume

  • Your resume should be targeted towards the job for which you are applying.
  • Read the job posting carefully to identify the specific knowledge, skills and attributes required.
  • Show how you meet the requirements of the job as stated on the job posting.
  • If possible, give examples of where you used the required skills in a previous position.
  • Review sample resumes and resume templates to find the one that best suits your style.
  • Avoid using colours or effects that will overshadow the information that you want to present.
  • Use clear and concise language - avoid jargon.
  • Proofread your resume to ensure that there are no spelling mistakes or typographical errors.

Tips for your job interview

  • Use this opportunity to speak about how you used your knowledge, skills and accomplishments in the past, and how they will help you going forward.
  • Before you go to the interview, research the company and be prepared to demonstrate how you would add value to the organization.
  • To help keep your responses clear, concise and relevant to the question, use the STAR technique when talking about past experience: clearly explain the Situation, the Task involved, the Action you took and the end Result.
  • Be prepared; arrive about 10 minutes early at the interview location.
  • It is a good idea to send a thank you note after the interview.
