Most businesses in Ontario that employ workers are covered by the WSIB. Under new legislation, independent operators, sole proprietors, some partners in a partnership and some executive officers who work in construction will also be required to have WSIB coverage starting in 2013.
New resources to support mandatory coverage in construction
Our Insurable earnings and premium estimator for the construction industry is a tool for employers and independent operators that will estimate and calculate WSIB insurable earnings and premiums based on the information that users provide.
Release of Administrative Practice Documents
After consulting widely, the WSIB has finalized the Administrative Practice Documents (known as APDs.) These documents are meant to provide detail and examples to help people better understand the new rules for mandatory coverage in the construction industry.
The WSIB uses the terms mandatory coverage and compulsory coverage interchangeably. Both terms have the same meaning - coverage is required as legislated.
Make sure you know about and understand the law and policies that expand mandatory coverage in construction so you can benefit from the changes and meet your obligations.
Release of supporting policies
After consulting widely, we've finalized four policies to help guide the administration of the legislation that became effective on January 1, 2013.
We have also released a revised policy on clearance certificates for non-construction employers to align with the WSIB's eClearance service and how clearances are issued.
