Update on General Electric (GE) Peterborough claims

We heard from the GE Peterborough community about the desire for us to take a closer look at some of their claims.

With evolving scientific evidence about the link between different chemicals and certain cancers, and updated information about exposures to chemicals at that plant, we believe it is the right time to re-examine more than 250 claims that had previously not been allowed. We want to make sure our decisions reflect the best available scientific evidence and current knowledge of historical exposures.

We will look at both cancer and non-cancer related claims since 2004 and will focus on:
  • Some types of cancer where updated scientific research supports linkages between specific levels of chemical exposures and specific illnesses.
  • Claims where advances in technology may allow next-of-kin to be identified who had previously not been.
  • Claims where a greater understanding of the intensity of exposure and/or number of agents exposed to, may impact the decision.
If you worked at GE Peterborough and have previously made a claim with the WSIB, we may be contacting you for more information.

If you are not sure whether you have a claim with us for a work-related illness, or to file a new claim, please call us at 1-800-387-0750.

Questions and answers

1. Why are you reviewing these claims?

With evolving scientific evidence about the link between different chemicals and certain cancers, and updated information about exposures to chemicals at that plant, we believe it is the right time to re-examine more than 250 claims that had previously not been allowed. We want to make sure our decisions reflect the best available scientific evidence and current knowledge of historical exposures.

2. Why are you focusing on GE Peterborough claims?

The Peterborough community has expressed a clear desire for us to re-examine these claims. Our Dedicated Review Team will look at more than 250 claims to determine if updated scientific research and/or a greater awareness of exposures would change the original decision.

3. What new information will be used to review select GE Peterborough claims?

The WSIB will focus on claims where new information or evidence is available that was not available at the time of the original decision, such as:
  • Evolution in scientific understanding published in authoritative sources that now support a previously unrecognized disease causal association.
  • New agent(s) of interest identified in a worker’s employment history.
  • New information received about the level/likelihood of exposure to a previously considered agent.

4. Who will be reviewing the GE claims?

A specialized Dedicated Review Team will triage and expedite decisions to ensure quality and consistency. This team will also review any new GE Peterborough claims received by the WSIB.

5. How do I know if my claim is being reviewed? Will I need to provide any new information?

The WSIB will be in contact with everyone whose claim is being reviewed. As each claim is unique, this may take a number of months. In some cases we may also need to collect and/or clarify additional information.

6. I think I have a GE claim but did not register with the WSIB, what should I do?

If you worked at GE Peterborough and have previously made a claim with the WSIB, we may be contacting you for more information.
