Information gathered about business operations or products determines a company’s classification. Employers pay premium rates based on the rate group the classification unit falls under. It is important to correctly classify a firm so it pays the appropriate premiums.
What is a metal service centre?
A metal service centre is an operation that buys any type of metal in primary shapes, often processes it in some way, and sells it in either the original or some different form to an end-user, generally for further manufacturing.
What classifications could apply to metal service centres?
Depending on its specific operations, a metal service centre may fall under:
- Rate Group (RG) 685, Classification Unit (CU) 5611-000 or
- Rate Group 387, Classification Unit 3099-003.
What does CU 5611-000 of RG 685 include?
This applies to employers who wholesale primary iron, steel and non-ferrous metal shapes of any thickness, without further processing other than single cutting to length (with or without minor deburring).
What does CU 3099-003 of RG 387 include?
This new classification was developed after consulting with the Metal Service Centre Institute. It is effective January 1, 2004 and applies to metal service centres and other employers that wholesale primary iron, steel and non-ferrous metal shapes of any thickness, with further processing on some or all shapes.
